Author's Biography
Norman Wilson Edmund was born in Boston, Mass. on February 27, 1916.  In 1942, after recovering from a long illness, he began a small mail order company in his bedroom at his mother's apartment in Oaklyn, N.J. He began with $300 in capital and a $9 classified ad. When Mr. Edmund retired in 1975, Edmund Scientific Co., in Barrington, N.J. occupied 69,000 square feet, spent $60,000 a month on advertising, and distributed 1,000,000 catalogs a year.

Introduction to the Blunder

In the 1940s teaching the scientific method was one of the modern objectives of education. However, Dr. James B. Conant, President of Harvard University and a leading educator and scientist of the day, stated in On Understanding Science (1947) that it was an "alleged method." In subsequent books, he said that the scientific method does not exist.

Dr. Conant advocated teaching science using the case history method, explaining that this method was used by Harvard Law School; a somewhat similar method was used by Harvard Business School.
